Which UK marketplace should you sell on? Fees, audiences, and honest trade-offs

Fee tables make marketplaces look interchangeable at different prices. They aren't — each fee funds a different machine, and the machine matters more than the rate. A quick tour of what you're actually joining, then a way to choose.

The eight machines

Etsy buys you the biggest handmade-intent audience anywhere, at a stack of small fees that quietly reaches 14–19% effective for many UK sellers. It's the default for a reason, and crowded for the same reason. Folksy is the low-cost UK-only sibling: kindest fees on the list, smallest footfall — works best as a second shopfront pointed at British buyers. eBay (private) charges you nothing and charges your buyer instead; unbeatable for clearing, resale and anything people search by brand or model. NOTHS is the expensive curated gift shop: 30% and an application, in exchange for buyers who arrived holding a gift budget. TikTok Shop is the growth machine: 9% flat, but the audience buys from videos, not searches — no content, no sales. Amazon Handmade puts craft next to the world's biggest buy-button at 12.24%; strong for giftable products with mainstream appeal, weak for anything needing story. Vinted is £0 and ruthless on price — for fashion resale it's now the default; for handmade it's the wrong room. Numonday is the newest deal on the list: £5 a month flat, 0% commission, UK sellers only — effectively cheap hosting for an audience you bring yourself, since its own footfall is still small (the crossover maths says the flat fee beats Etsy's stack from about three sales a month).

Choose by product, then by effort type

Two questions do most of the work. First: does your product get searched for, browsed for, or discovered? Searched (brand, model, specific need) → eBay/Amazon. Browsed with gift intent → Etsy/NOTHS/Folksy. Discovered through content → TikTok Shop. Second: what effort can you sustain? Etsy rewards listing quality and SEO patience; TikTok rewards filming; NOTHS rewards range curation. The best marketplace you can't feed is worse than the second-best you can.

Start with two, not eight

One primary (where your product's discovery style lives) plus one cheap secondary (Folksy, Numonday or eBay private, costing pence to maintain) gives you comparison data without splitting your effort eight ways. Add channels when a product proves it travels. And price each channel for its own fee stack — the multichannel pricing guide covers why copying one price everywhere leaks margin.
